Here is a neck re-set on a 1965 Hofner Beatle Bass:

This bass was received in the above condition (left). The neck is clearly separating from the body. Some steam was used to loosen what was left of the ( very brittle ) hide glue. You can see the neck freeing itself from the body during the removal process (right).

The neck joint is then cleaned up in preparation for re-gluing.

Here we see both sides after the glue has dried. Note the nice action on the right.

A couple of more shots of the finished neck re-set.

On the left, we have the before pic showing the low E string "falling off" the fret board. On the right, the finished Hofner neck re-set. Note the evenly spaced strings.
